About the Bowmore Distillery
Founded in 1779 on the shores of Loch Indaal, Bowmore is the oldest licensed distillery on the Isle of Islay. Its among the oldest in all of Scotland. The core identity of Bowmore is deeply tied to the legendary No. 1 Vaults, the country’s oldest maturation warehouse, sitting partly below sea level where damp, salty maritime air gently shapes every cask over time.
What sets Bowmore apart is its dedication to traditional whisky-making practices that many modern distilleries have set aside. It remains one of the few places in Scotland that still operates its own floor maltings, turning barley by hand using traditional wooden shovels. This barley is then dried over local Islay peat fires to impart Bowmore’s signature medium-peat smoke (around 25–30 ppm). Combined with traditional Oregon pine washbacks and copper pot stills, this meticulous process crafts a wonderfully balanced single malt. Often offering a lighter, fruity, and coastal elegance alongside warm, velvety wood smoke.
Tasting Notes
Nose: On the nose, this is very obviously a whisky from Islay. It’s that iconic balance of sweet and smoke. Dark chocolate, sweet rum, raisins or dried fruits, and gentle woody smoke.
Palate (Flavour & Texture): On the palate, full-bodied and supremely velvety. Creamy toffee, dark chocolate malt, damsons and dried fruit, cinnamon, and the suggestion of nutmeg. The smoke is warm and soft – finely balanced with salt-caramel and sherry wood resins. The flavour is full on indulgence.
Finish: Bowmore 15’s finish is long, complex, and lingering. You’ll notice the lingering peat smoke, warming oak spice, buttery malt, and a trace of maritime brine.

Who it’s for: All who try Bowmore 15 will adore it. It’s a fantastic spirit worth every second of the 15 years it’s taken to mature.

I love anything from Bowmore, and while the Bowmore 10 is slightly more towards my tastes, the 15 is sublime. All of it’s rich and silky indulgence – the sweet and smoky perfectly balanced in the glass. This is one to buy for when you settle in on your own. This is not a whisky to share with anybody – it is one for you, and you alone.
